Piemonte Harvest 2025: High Quality, Lower Production, and New Market Strategies

The 2025 harvest in Piemonte closes with a positive outlook on grape quality but a production decline of 7–10% compared to last year. According to data from Regione Piemonte and Vignaioli Piemontesi in the annual report L’Annata Vitivinicola in Piemonte, regional production exceeds 2.15 million hectoliters, of which 2 million are PDO wines, representing 93% of the total.

With an estimated value of €1.18 billion (2024), Piemonte ranks second among Italian regions for its impact on the wine industry’s turnover, confirming its strategic role in the national economy.

A Vintage Rated “Eight and a Half Stars” and a Shrinking Vineyard

Climate conditions accelerated grape ripening and anticipated harvest dates in many areas. A rainy spring followed by an early, hot summer reduced yields but ensured excellent grape quality.

Technical ratings:

  • Nine stars: Arneis, Favorita, Brachetto, Nebbiolo (Langhe & Roero)
  • Eight and a half stars: Cortese, Dolcetto, Chardonnay
  • Eight stars: Barbera, Moscato Bianco, Pinot Noir

Vineyard surface decreased to 43,792 hectares, confirming the contraction trend that began in 2023 after the peaks of 2021–2022. While Piemonte’s vineyard remains stable in the medium term, this reversal signals a downsizing after years of expansion.

Piemonte closes 2025 with excellent grape quality, reduced production, and evolving export markets. Trends, ratings, and future strategies.

Wine Exports Down, Emerging Markets Up

Exports fell by 2.8%, with moderate declines in the U.S., Germany, UK, and Switzerland, while Sweden and Canada held steady.

Nomisma Wine Monitor highlights the need to reduce dependency on the U.S. market. Over the past five years, Piemonte has achieved significant growth in consolidated markets like Spain (+202%), France (+86%), and Australia (+62%), and in emerging markets such as UAE (+196%), South Korea (+165%), and Brazil (+76%), which is expected to grow further with tariff reductions under the Mercosur agreement.

Experts Speak: Promotion and Innovation as Strategic Levers

“Research, innovation, and promotion are the three key objectives for Piemonte wine. Fighting invasive pests and diseases, monitoring and responding to climate change, and spreading new technologies are priorities. Regione Piemonte is strengthening efforts through Fondazione Agrion and partnerships with all stakeholders. Piemonte wine is an excellence that should not fear tariffs or crises in traditional markets. We must structure coordinated promotion to penetrate new markets,” said Paolo Bongioanni, Regional Councillor.

On international competitiveness, Giulio Porzio, President of Vignaioli Piemontesi, added:

“We face a profound transformation affecting the entire wine supply chain, requiring responsibility from policymakers. Promotion is essential but not enough: we need continuous dialogue with the Region and Government and timely decisions on vineyard potential.”

Wine Tourism and Direct Sales: Opportunities for Growth

Piemonte confirms its leadership in wine tourism and direct sales, with a 20% increase in bookings and average spending over the past two years. Seasonality now extends to November, driven by strong domestic tourism—a sign that proximity tourism is a vital resource for the sector.

Cooperation and Funding for the Future

33 cooperative wineries, representing 6,000 members, account for 33% of Piemonte’s wine production. For the 2024/2025 campaign, Piemonte has €18.25 million from the OCM Wine program for promotion, vineyard restructuring, and technological investments, plus €6 million for quality product enhancement.
