10 years of Consorzio Doc Maremma Toscana: a review

Continuous growth in numbers: 469 associated companies, over 7 million bottles per year and bottled wine registering a +6.9% despite the difficult moment for the sector. The Consorzio Tutela Vini of the Doc Maremma Toscana cuts the milestone of its first 10 years in a positive way.

“It is a wonderful birthday for a DOC that is acquiring ever greater credibility and that is increasingly establishing itself on national and international markets, working on the quality of the product and on the modernity and beauty of its cellars”, says Stefania Saccardi, vice president and councilor for Agri-food of the Tuscany Region. “The Consortium has done an extraordinary job of protecting and enhancing these wines, developing promotion and protection and taking around the world a Maremma that is also increasingly a place of tourist attraction”.

“We have worked hard to bring the Maremma Toscana DOC to an ever higher level of quality and visibility,” explains Francesco Mazzei, who has led the Consortium since 2018. “We have made clear progress but there is still a lot to do.”

“We are currently in fourth place for bottled wines among the Tuscan Denominations, and even in these first ten months of the year we have recorded growth, in contrast with the regional trend, we are young and dynamic. The goal is to close 2024 by exceeding 7 million bottles and to carry forward some projects that we are particularly keen on, such as the rationalization of the specifications, research and viticultural characterization, wine tourism and synergy with other Consortia in the area.”

10 years of growth in numbers: 469 associated companies, over 7 million bottles per year for the Consorzio Tutela Vini Doc Maremma Toscana.

The numbers, from 2014 to 2024, speak clearly: there were nine members at the time of incorporation and now the figure of 469 companies operating throughout the province of Grosseto has been reached. We have gone from almost 3.5 million bottles in 2014 to 7 million and more for the current year. The evolution has also seen important changes regarding the different typologies: if in 2014 the reds marked 69% with 28% of whites and 3% of rosés, in 2024 the reds dropped to 54% with rosés substantially stable at 4% while the whites exceeded 40%, with Vermentino driving the Denomination and which – with a share of more than 30% of the bottled – is currently the most bottled typology of the DOC. Wine production in the area involves small and medium-sized winemakers alongside some of the most renowned names in the national wine scene, who see Maremma Toscana as an area rich in potential.

Considering the first ten months of the year with regard to the trend of bottled wine (Avito data), Maremma Toscana is one of the few denominations with a positive sign (+6.9%) with the prospect of closing 2024 exceeding, for the first time, 7 million bottles.

“With Vermentino, which is giving us great satisfaction, we have certainly obtained an improvement in the value of the Doc Maremma Toscana brand, a path to be pursued also with the other types of wine provided for by the regulations; the objective of 10 million bottles in the medium term remains firm, a critical mass essential for having more visibility on the markets”, reiterates Mazzei.

Doc Maremma Toscana: growth is in the name of sustainability

Over the past 10 years, the Consorzio Tutela Vini della Maremma Toscana has seen constant expansion.

“The Consortium has grown significantly,” comments director Luca Pollini, “bringing Maremma Toscana among the most respected and dynamic wine-growing areas in the region. Our commitment to quality and innovation has attracted new members, recording a constant increase in production and visibility of our wines on international markets. We are aware that the great ampelographic variety that Maremma can offer, with an uncontaminated territory in a unique environmental context where the vine is inserted in a harmonious and balanced way and biodiversity is an established factor, constitute a strong point and have helped us in the growth process of the Denomination”.

Maremma Toscana is a territory of 450,000 hectares where vines occupy about 2%, for just over 9,000 hectares, and over 40% is occupied by woods and natural areas, where over 44% of the agricultural surfaces are managed according to organic methods, well above the regional average (37.5%) and where there are many beaches awarded with Blue Flags.

The city of Grosseto has received, from the European Commission, the European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism 2024, a recognition designed for those destinations that are pioneers of intelligent and sustainable tourism. In the territory of the municipality of Manciano, moreover, there is the purest and starriest night sky in peninsular Italy, testifying to the almost total absence of pollution.

“All these characteristics are a formidable driving force for our Denomination and for the Consortium and can only give us hope for the future”, concludes director Pollini.
