The ultimate expression of the winery’s most prized vintage from white grape varieties: a harmonious blend of aromas, from fruity to intense. The St. Michael-Eppan winery is pleased to present “Appius 2019”, Hans Terzer’s “dream wine”, which honours the excellence of each vintage and which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. The Super Cuvée of white wines, personally selected by Terzer, represents the best of the 2019 vintage, which was characterised by a late harvest that enabled a first-class combination of the selected grapes. A wine that is stylistically consistent with previous vintages, straightforward and direct, with a particular view to longevity.
The “dream wine” by Hans Terzer
10 years of Appius. The “dream wine” and most ambitious vintage representation by Hans Terzer, the legendary cellar master of the St. Michael-Eppan winery, celebrates its tenth year with Appius 2019, the Cuvée made of four white grape varieties: Chardonnay (60 percent), Pinot Gris (15 percent), Pinot Blanc (13 percent) and Sauvignon Blanc (12 percent).
Predicated on the principle: the best of each grape variety from the 2019 vintage, Appius is the result of careful selection in the vineyard, individual processing in the wine cellar and careful assemblage.
The 2019 vintage shows a linear, straightforward and precise profile, designed for longevity. The aging begins with biological acid fermentation (with the exception of the Sauvignon) and then continues with aging in barriques/tonneau. After a year, the assemblage takes place and then a further three years maturation on the lees in steel tanks, with two years being on the fine lees.
The detailed sensory analysis of the new Appius 2019: to the eye, a bright straw yellow colour enriched by deep olive green reflections is revealed; the nose is very intense: first ripe tropical fruits, mainly pineapple, mango and papaya, which demonstrate the Chardonnay, then white-fleshed fruits such as quince and Williams pear, revealing the character of Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris. The Sauvignon is evidenced through typical citrus notes, floral elements (orange blossom and narcissus) and herbal elements: mediterranean (wild fennel) and balmy (calamint). Finally, tertiary notes of bourbon vanilla, roasted barley and tobacco.
On the palate, softness and acidity are strong, but in perfect balance: the sweetness of the fruit being harmoniously balanced by the acidity, which tempers and softens the libation. Finally, wholesome and tangy balmy nuances (bergamot, tobacco, chocolate, cinnamon and saffron) emerge in the aftertaste.
Appius 2019 pairs well with hearty fish dishes such as turbot or monkfish, but also with mushroom and truffle based delicacies, fine white meat and game. Creamy rind and mature cheeses are also excellent companions.
10 years of Appius, the Super Cuvée by St. Michael-Eppan winery
Appius, whose name is the historical and Roman derivation of the name Eppan, was born ten years ago with the 2010 vintage, and subsequently by the years 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.
The aim of Appius is to create a wine that reflects the best of each year’s vintage and expresses the creativity and sensitivity of its creator, Hans Terzer. The bottle design and label are also reinterpreted with each edition: over the years, a “wine collection” has emerged that delights wine lovers globally.
The label of the tenth edition of Appius, designed by Life Circus, crowns this important anniversary and structures its graphic aspect around the emblematic number 10, presented in a captivating transposition of gold and platinum. The image always allows for free interpretation, giving every wine lover the chance to draw their own inspiration from it. As with the other vintages, this edition of Appius is also limited.
