For over a week, 27 Masters of Wine from the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Poland, China, and Italy travelled across Sicily thanks to an intensive programme of visits, tastings, and meetings coordinated by the Sicilia Doc Consortium. This strategic project allowed some of the world’s most authoritative wine professionals to gain first-hand insight into the territories, appellations, and key figures shaping contemporary Sicilian wine. From the welcome in Palermo to the journey from Marsala to Etna, concluding in Catania before departing for Pantelleria, the tour showcased a dynamic, identity-driven Sicily capable of expressing extraordinary oenological richness. A journey that strengthens the international positioning of the denomination and the entire regional system.
A collective narrative uniting territories, consortia, and communities
The Sicilia Doc Consortium acted as the coordinating force behind a shared narrative involving appellation consortia, producers, and local communities. As Director Camillo Pugliesi emphasized, welcoming the Masters of Wine means offering a direct experience of Sicily’s diverse territories. Presenting the region collectively, he added, makes it possible to highlight differences within a shared identity and deliver a strong message to leading international opinion makers.
The tour began in Palermo with a welcome dinner in a historic palace. From there, the group travelled through Sicily’s main wine districts: Marsala, Monreale, Vittoria, Etna, and finally Catania, where the Consortium’s President greeted participants with a final tasting before their departure for Pantelleria.
Tastings, masterclasses, and technical visits: Sicily’s wine identity takes center stage
Masterclasses with producers, vineyard visits, and themed tastings allowed the Masters of Wine to explore the full breadth of Sicily’s viticultural heritage. Landscapes, soils, microclimates, and diverse winemaking cultures revealed an island where tradition and modernity coexist. The focus on Sicilia Doc wines offered a comprehensive overview of the region’s production: traditional-method sparkling wines from Grillo and Lucido, whites from Grillo, Insolia, and Catarratto, late-harvest wines, Nero d’Avola rosés, and a selection of reds highlighting Frappato, Nerello Mascalese, and Perricone. A sensory journey designed to express the biodiversity and stylistic richness of Sicilian wine.
