Veronafiere and Vinitaly have revealed the names of the judges who will take on the role of General Chair for the eighth edition of 5StarWines & Wine Without Walls 2024, which will be held in Verona from 9 to 11 April. The annual selection is a three-day tasting that puts the spotlight on all those wineries that invest in improving their products. During the event, a jury of highly qualified industry professionals tastes, giving a score out of hundredths to the participating wines. At the 2023 edition, more than 2200 bottles took part in the evaluation, of which 733 were selected for inclusion in the 5StarWines – the Book 2024 guide. Companies wishing to participate have until March 1st to present their application for admission on the official website of the event.
5StarWines & Wine Without Walls 2024: how the selection works, Daniele Cernilli and Andrea Lonardi MW new members of the General Chair panel
The eighth edition of 5StarWines & Wine Without Walls, the three-day blind tasting organized every year by Veronafiere, will lead to a selection of wines of great value and quality.
The participating judges come from different geographical areas of the world, have different professional backgrounds and specialize in different styles of wine. Both the diversification of the judges and the blind tasting method adopted aim to guarantee the objectivity of the selection process and the internationalization of the wines.
“The producers selected for 5StarWines & Wine Without Walls are announced on the Friday evening before Vinitaly,” explains Stevie Kim, Managing Partner of Vinitaly. “This allows us to personally deliver the diplomas to them at their respective stands before the fair opens on Sunday. Diplomas offer holders greater visibility and prestige and represent an important engagement tool recognized by international buyers. Furthermore, this year there will be a special tasting session led by the General Chairs, featuring the best wines and producers.”
In the 2023 edition, more than 70 international judges participated, divided into multiple commissions. The attribution of scores is up to the Panel Chairs, who confirm or rework the judges’ judgment and formulate the tasting notes. The wines that are eligible for a score equal to or greater than 90, based on a preliminary evaluation, are subject to a subsequent judgment by the General Chairs, who then decree the final score.
The General Chair panel, the most important of the Selection, will be represented for 2024 by five renowned professionals.
Among these, we have the pillars of 5StarWines & Wine Without Walls Pedro Ballesteros Torres MW (Belgium), Via Ambassador and OIV expert for Spain, Robert Joseph (UK), business consultant in the wine sector, editor for Meininger’s Wine Business International and wine producer, and Bernard Burtschy (France), wine columnist for Les Echos and several French magazines, as well as permanent member of the Grand Jury Européen.
Alongside the three veterans present since 2017, Daniele Cernilli (Italy), who has been part of the Scientific Committee in the last four editions.
With the co-founder and director of the online magazine Doctor Wine, the latest new entry among the General Chairs is Andrea Lonardi MW (Italy), to date one of the only two Italian Masters of Wine and Coo of Angelini Wines & Estates, vice-president of the Protection Consortium Vini della Valpolicella and member of the Board of Directors of Unione Italiana Vini.
