The Consorzio Tutela Vini della Maremma Toscana presents itself with a new logo, created by the Angelini Design agency, to strengthen the communication of the DOC wines. At the center of the project is the desire to highlight the particularity and uniqueness of this territory to This is why the graphic choice fell on the Maremma horse, one of the most identifying elements of the Tuscan Maremma, capable of expressing the strong and uncontaminated nature, the main characteristic of the Maremma territory.

“The idea of renewing ourselves – explains Francesco Mazzei, president of the Consorzio Tutela Vini della Maremma Toscana – arises from the need to give our DOC an even more immediate image that immediately brings us back to the connection with the territory”.

“Modern Maremma horses, strong but with a more refined style, are the result of crossing with Arabian, English, Spanish and Berber horse breeds. Just as viticulture in Maremma, initially based on the more traditional varieties, has gradually seen the introduction of new international vines which have allowed a widespread qualitative improvement in the production of our wines”.

The project therefore starts from the study of the Maremma horse and its evolution. His presence, since ancient times, is testified by frescoes, sculptures and Etruscan decorations, which place him among the protagonists of this reality. The particular environmental conditions of the Maremma and the intervention of man have contributed to selecting a horse with exceptional characteristics, just as the wines of the Denomination want to be exceptional, in all their facets. The green color chosen for the logo instead aims to recall the concept of integrity and naturalness of the territory since the Maremma is one of the greenest territories of the Peninsula, with the virtual absence of industrial activities and very low anthropization.

For many years, man and horse together have made history. Until the early 1900s when work began on the selection and improvement of Italian breeds, in particular the Maremma breed, known for its rusticity, longevity and robustness. With the introduction in Pinerolo of the school founded by the Livorno captain Federico Caprilli, the man who revolutionized the art of riding throughout Europe by inventing modern sports disciplines over obstacles, the improved Maremma began to be selected, trained for the newborn horse riding competitions.

The famous Crispa, Derna, Hake, winners of international competitions, came from the Maremma farms.

Furthermore, the green color of the logo recalls the integrity of the territory and its “green” character, so much so that approximately 44% of the Maremma vineyards are managed with the organic method or are in conversion, a figure above the Tuscan average which stands at 38%.

In Maremma almost 45% of the territory is occupied by wooded areas in a varied environmental context where biodiversity is an established factor.

The seas of the coast are recognized as the cleanest in Italy, furthermore in Maremma there is the purest and most starry night sky in peninsular Italy, due to the rural characteristics of the area which determine an almost total absence of light pollution. In short, the Maremma is a living example of preserved nature.
