There is a taut thread running through the 2025 vintage in Alto Adige: precision. A subtle balance between favorable climatic conditions and a complex harvest that required experience, speed, and timely decisions. The result, according to experts, is a vintage capable of expressing fresh, fruity, and aromatic white wines and deep reds with intense colors and excellent aging potential. The 2025 vintage thus presents itself as an “exciting year,” built on an articulated climatic dynamic and vineyard management that made the difference in determining the final quality.
A climatic balance that built quality
The season was marked by a mild spring, which accelerated vegetative growth, followed by an explosive flowering even at higher altitudes. A dynamic that directly influenced harvest timing, compressing it and making it more complex to manage.
A sunny June and a July characterized by well‑distributed rainfall, however, ensured optimal grape ripening. “It was precisely the cooler month of July that favored a slow and uniform distribution of aroma,” says Manfred Bernard, winemaker at Tenuta | Cantina Convento Muri‑Gries.
Rudi Kofler, winemaker at Cantina Terlano, instead highlights the decisive role of water in July: “The dry heat at the beginning of August also contributed to structural density and the balance of aromas.”
A complex harvest, quality preserved
If the vegetative season laid solid foundations, the harvest represented the real test. The simultaneous ripening of varieties, even at different altitudes, shortened picking times, further complicated by heavy rains.
“It was difficult to find the right moment to harvest each variety, therefore always associated with a certain risk,” explains Hannes Baumgartner of Tenuta Strasserhof, effectively summarizing the tension of those days.
Yet, thanks to manual work in the vineyard and careful timing, grape quality remained high. “Thanks to rigorous manual work in the vineyards and the right choice of harvest period, it was possible to ensure very good grape quality that rewarded the year’s efforts.”
The 2025 vintage in Alto Adige: freshness, energy, and clarity
The result is a clear stylistic profile. The wines of the 2025 vintage stand out for precision, energy, and clear aromatic readability. Baumgartner describes them as “precise, savory, elegant,” while Bernard calls them “fruity, energetic, deep.”
The whites show a leaner structure and moderate alcohol, supported by a lively and well‑integrated acidic component. “The whites of the 2025 vintage are fruity on the nose and very elegant on the palate, with a more substantial acidic component,” says Baumgartner.
The reds, on the other hand, are delicate yet structured, with young and dynamic tannins. “The reds of the 2025 vintage are fruity and deep, supported by a beautiful structure,” notes Manfred Bernard.
Sauvignon in the spotlight and native varieties in great shape
Among the absolute protagonists of 2025 is Sauvignon, described without hesitation as a “record‑breaking vintage.” Precise, mineral wines with good softness, capable of expressing the full potential of the variety in Alto Adige.
Native varieties also performed strongly. Lagrein stands out for its intense color, structure, and elegance, while Schiava impresses with aromatic depth and crisp tannins, confirming itself as one of the most interesting expressions of the vintage.
Alongside them, Pinot Noir, Merlot, and the main white varieties — from Chardonnay to Riesling, including Sylvaner and Kerner — offer an overall picture of great qualitative solidity, where freshness and precision become the common thread.
