Alto Adige wines: the 2023 vintage amazes and conquers

Great wines are also born from great challenges. And the efforts of the South Tyrolean producers have been rewarded: at least as confirmed by the operators’ judgment at the last Vinitaly on a 2023 vintage that has managed to amaze and conquer the public. On the occasion of the main Italian wine event, as already done previously at Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris and Prowein, Alto Adige confirmed its reputation as a producer of fresh and refined whites appreciated throughout the world and of great reds.

“We are once again satisfied with our cohesive participation in the fair; there was truly great interest from visitors and the producers confirm that Vinitaly is an important and strategic stage to give a preview of the new 2023 vintage and to capture all the excellence and variety of our small territory”, explains Andreas Kofler, president of the Alto Adige Wine Consortium.

“Alto Adige continues to be well recognized as a producer of fresh and refined white wines: from Gewürztraminer to Pinot Bianco up to Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The elegance of our Pinot Noir was appreciated and among the red varieties, good attention was also paid to the native Schiava and Lagrein”.

The collective stand – where various tastings with very specific themes took place – received excellent feedback and the entire area of the fair dedicated to Alto Adige saw an extraordinary turnout for four days.

This year’s Vinitaly was precisely the opportunity to take a look at the 2023 wines, a complex vintage that put the producers to the test, confirming their ability to manage the most difficult challenges: the South Tyrolean productions, both the whites and the red, are in fact confirmed in all their quality.

“A year of enormous efforts but the South Tyrolean winemakers have a lot of experience with adverse conditions, they know what to do and use the necessary diligence”, underlines Eduard Bernhart, director of the Alto Adige Wines consortium, who then analyzes the vintage: “The However, unusually high temperatures after the start of the harvest were a real stroke of luck, especially for the later ripening varieties.”

The red wines of Alto Adige from the 2023 vintage in particular reflect this aspect: powerful, rich in colour, with good fruit and fully ripe tannins. “They are very elegant wines,” concludes Bernhart. But looking ahead, an interesting year is also expected for white wines: “They are beautiful, fresh, refined and very elegant”, adds President Kofler.

There were several hundred operators, journalists and enthusiasts from all over the world who were attracted to the stand of the Alto Adige Wine Consortium organized together with IDM Südtirol. After the events in Paris and Düsseldorf, the objective of showing how many cultivation areas, how many vines, how many microclimates, but also how many producers, so different from each other, coexist in this province which confirms itself be a favorite place for viticulture.
