As per tradition, ahead of the Merano WineFestival, Cantina San Michele Appiano unveiled Appius 2021, the 12th edition of the Alto Adige prestige Cuvée—a project launched in 2010 to interpret each vintage through a selection of the finest grapes. This new edition features a predominance of Chardonnay (73%), complemented by Pinot Grigio (12%), Pinot Bianco (10%), and Sauvignon (5%), in a blend that expresses the freshness of the mountains and the stylistic precision of one of Alto Adige’s iconic wineries.
A Complex Vintage, A Collector’s Wine
2021 was a challenging year for Alto Adige viticulture: a long winter, cool spring, and rainy summer delayed the vegetative cycle, but dry, sunny September and October days with sharp temperature swings allowed for ideal aromatic ripening. The result is Appius 2021—a Cuvée of great balance, crisp and vertical, emblematic of the region’s ability to turn challenges into beauty.
Appius 2021: Freshness and Depth
Appius 2021 shows a bright pastel yellow color with lime-green reflections, signaling youth and a strong acidic backbone. On the nose, notes of gooseberry, white currant, alpine herbs such as arnica and juniper, and acacia and hawthorn blossoms.
On the palate, a fine, vibrant texture, lively freshness, and a rounded, persistent sip, with citrus nuances, hazelnut, and peanut butter from barrel aging.
A wine designed to defy time, perfect with oysters, shellfish, mushroom risotto, white meats, and Japanese cuisine.

The name Appius recalls the Roman roots of Appiano. Each edition reinterprets the vintage with an exclusive design: for 2021, the label by LifeCircus features a golden vortex evoking the swirling motion of wine in the glass.
