Asti DOCG: 2025 Down in Traditional Markets, but China and Asia Take Off

Asti Rosé becomes official with the new DOCG category, blending Moscato Bianco and Brachetto to open fresh opportunities.

The Asti DOCG Consortium closes a difficult 2025, marked by an unstable international landscape and tensions in two key markets: the United States, the main destination for Moscato d’Asti, and Russia, historically the number‑one market for Asti Spumante. According to data processed using NielsenIQ, global sales in large‑scale distribution and retail are close to 75 million bottles, recording an overall –9% decline.

If 2025 confirms a picture of difficulty in traditional markets, it also highlights important signs of change—especially in Asia. The strong growth of China and neighboring markets opens new commercial trajectories that the Consortium intends to consolidate, in a diversification path increasingly necessary for a denomination that depends heavily on exports.

The phase is difficult—this is no surprise, not only for our denomination,” notes Consortium President Stefano Ricagno, “but for us, the general contraction in consumption is compounded by tensions in two markets that alone account for over 40% of our sales, and that has weighed heavily. But even in a year of tensions, there were positive signs, starting with the evident growth in Asian demand—China first and foremost—which is reaching significant volumes and is a good omen. We have an urgent need to broaden our commercial reach.

Asti Spumante is the most affected, falling –12.4% with 49.3 million bottles sold.
Moscato d’Asti, by contrast, limits losses to –1.8%, for a total of 25 million bottles.

Consortium Director Giacomo Pondini highlights that Moscato d’Asti would have closed in positive territory “excluding the decline in the U.S. (–7.6%, 58% share of total sales),” thanks to overall stability in Europe (–0.6%) and especially “growth (+11.3%) in Asian countries, starting with China, which posts +55%, becoming the third‑largest market for this category. Asia’s share of total foreign sales thus rises to 18%.
