Asti Rosé becomes official: green light for the new DOCG category

Asti Rosé becomes official with the new DOCG category, blending Moscato Bianco and Brachetto to open fresh opportunities.

Asti Rosé is now officially a reality. With its publication in the Official Gazette on 23 March 2026, a process that began in 2023 comes to an end, opening a new chapter for the Asti Docg Consortium, which will be able to present the new rosé category with a symbolic first toast at Vinitaly. A historic milestone that expands the boundaries of the Denomination and offers producers a new space for stylistic and commercial expression through Moscato Bianco and Brachetto.

A unique rosé in the Italian wine landscape: the union of Moscato and Brachetto

The new category is born from a blend combining Moscato Bianco destined for Asti Docg (from 70% to 90%) and Brachetto destined for Brachetto d’Acqui Docg (from 10% to 30%). A rare combination in the Italian wine world, bringing together two aromatic varieties to create a rosé with a distinctive identity.

The production rules allow all stylistic variations, from sweet to extra brut, giving producers full freedom to adjust residual sugar according to target markets and consumer preferences.

“The inclusion of Asti Rosé in the production regulations represents an important recognition of the historical and oenological vocation of this territory,” explains Stefano Ricagno, president of the Asti Docg Consortium. “This new category is a true unicum in the Italian landscape: it brings together two different grape varieties, both aromatic. At Vinitaly we will symbolically toast to this achievement for the first time; in the following months, the producers who believe in the project and have invested in experimentation will develop production, initially estimated between 5 and 10 million bottles, depending also on market response.”

Sustainable innovation: lighter bottles and new rules

The updated production regulations also introduce two important changes aimed at sustainability and product modernisation. The minimum bottle weight requirement has been removed, allowing producers to adopt lighter solutions with a direct impact on reducing emissions throughout the supply chain.

Additionally, the obligation to print the word “Asti” on corks has been abolished, offering wineries greater flexibility in packaging customisation.

Asti Rosé: a new opportunity for the DOCG

Asti Rosé represents a significant expansion of the DOCG’s identity, which has historically interpreted the tradition of Italian Moscato while reinventing it in a contemporary key. With this new category, the Consortium opens the door to broader market positioning, especially in international markets where the rosé category — and particularly aromatic rosés — continues to grow.

The estimated production of 5 to 10 million bottles in the first years reflects strong interest, which will be measured in the months following the start of bottling, possible as early as thirty days after publication in the Official Gazette.
