Baglio di Pianetto: Arbëreshë roots and high‑altitude wines for a Sicily looking to the future

Baglio di Pianetto: Shùmè e tre nuovi Etna d’altura, unendo radici arbëreshë, identità siciliana e una visione contemporanea del vino.

Baglio di Pianetto tells the story of a Sicily that safeguards memory and identity, transforming them into a contemporary vision. From the highlands of Santa Cristina Gela and Piana degli Albanesi to the Etna vineyards of Contrada Arcurìa and Santo Spirito, the winery led by Grégoire Desforges presents a project that weaves together culture, territory, and new generations.

A journey rooted in the bond with the Arbëreshë community — “a living presence that has preserved language, rituals, and agricultural traditions” — and which today expresses itself through high‑altitude wines, targeted collaborations, and a language capable of engaging an increasingly aware audience.

Shùmè: a sparkling wine that blends energy, identity, and modernity

Among the new releases stands Shùmè, the new sparkling wine whose Arbëreshë name means “a lot” and also echoes the Sicilian word sciuma, the foam of the waves. A double reference that conveys energy, conviviality, and Mediterranean vitality.

Shùmè is born from a land of contrasts, where high elevations meet sea‑borne aromas. It is fresh, immediate, and designed to appeal to a broad audience, thanks to its bright aesthetic and accessible language.

The packaging reflects this philosophy: the label is inspired by Mondello beach, while the transparent bottle lets the light shine through, becoming a metaphor for an essential, territory‑respectful production approach. As Desforges notes, “we tell the story of a wine that doesn’t exclude, one that puts conviviality at the center,” reaching consumers who are curious and attentive to sustainability.

Etna: five years of research shaping a new high‑altitude identity

Baglio di Pianetto’s journey on Etna enters a new phase after five years of experimentation. The vineyards lie on the northern slope, between Contrada Arcurìa and Contrada Santo Spirito, at altitudes between 650 and 850 meters. Here, the winery firmly asserts its identity as a producer of mountain wines.

The collaboration with Cantine Valenti has made it possible to update winemaking technologies and aging spaces, enhancing the six hectares of vineyards in Passopisciaro. Three new interpretations emerge: Carricante from Contrada Arcurìa, and Nerello Mascalese — both red and rosé — from Contrada Santo Spirito. Wines focused on freshness, balance, and longevity, the result of an approach that prioritizes elegance and expressive purity.

As oenologist Graziana Grassini explains, “stainless‑steel vinification, nine months on the fine lees, and another nine in bottle” allow verticality and finesse to shine.

The new Etna wines: three different expressions of a single vision

Etna Bianco Contrada Arcurìa (2024) is straw‑yellow with green‑gold highlights. The nose reveals almond, sanacore plum, citron, citrus, delicate flowers, and balsamic notes. The palate is fresh, saline, and crisp, with a long, persistent finish.

Etna Rosso Contrada Santo Spirito (2024) shows a bright ruby color, with aromas of rose, pomegranate, blueberry, aromatic herbs, and tarocco orange. The palate is marine, mineral, and harmonious.

Etna Rosato Contrada Santo Spirito (2025) completes the trilogy with a fragrant, mineral profile supported by lively acidity. Notes of peach, fresh almond, cherry, redcurrant, and citrus intertwine with hints of dog rose and Mediterranean nuances.

A Sicily that unites memory and vision

Baglio di Pianetto continues to build a bridge between roots and modernity. Two different territories — the Palermo highlands and the volcano — but a single direction: creating culture through wine, with authenticity and precision. A project that is not only oenological but also identity‑driven: a way of narrating today’s Sicily, with deep roots in memory and a clear gaze toward the future.
