Brezich 2021: a new chapter in the heart of the Collio for Attems

Attems debuts Brezich 2021, a Collio Cabernet Riserva born from Cabernet Franc and Carmenère on the Brezich hill.

Attems opens a new chapter in its history with the debut of Brezich 2021, Collio DOC Cabernet Riserva. A release that marks the entry of the historic Collio Goriziano estate into the world of great red wines, without abandoning its identity.

The wine is born from the blend of Cabernet Franc and Carmenère grown on the namesake Brezich hill, at 80 meters above sea level, where ponca soils and a panorama stretching from the Julian Alps to the Adriatic shape a unique terroir. A thoughtful choice, produced in limited quantities, that expands the expressive horizon of Attems, owned by the Frescobaldi family, whose winemaking tradition dates back to 1106.

A new face for Attems: the Brezich project

Brezich is conceived as a synthesis of territory and vision. Cabernet Franc and Carmenère, similar in origin and morphology, find in ponca a natural ally: ancient Eocene marl and sandstone that deliver mineral tension, depth and aromatic complexity.

Gianni Napolitano, technical director, describes a gradual path: meticulous work on Cabernet Franc to achieve an expression capable of combining structure and elegance, always respecting the identity of the Collio.

For Attems—historically linked to white varieties such as Ribolla Gialla, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay—the arrival of Brezich represents a clear choice: demonstrating that Collio, with its sea‑tempered brightness and strong diurnal shifts, can also give life to red wines of great character.

2021 vintage: natural balance and ideal ripening

The 2021 season unfolded with slow, harmonious rhythms. A cold winter delayed budbreak, while a cool, rainy spring supported early growth. Summer, marked by strong temperature variations and well‑distributed rainfall, fostered a perfect balance between sugar ripeness and phenolic development.

The harvest, carried out in the second decade of September, yielded grapes in optimal condition, with aromas, structure and polyphenols in full harmony—solid foundations for a wine destined to evolve over time.

Vinification, ageing and sensory profile

The grapes are hand‑harvested, destemmed and gently crushed. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel with temperature‑controlled maceration, supported by pump‑overs and punch‑downs aimed at balanced extraction.

After malolactic fermentation, the wine ages for 24 months in first‑ and second‑pass French oak barriques, followed by an additional 24 months in bottle. A long and patient process that allows Brezich to express its full depth.

In the glass, it shows an intense ruby red with garnet highlights. The bouquet is broad: ripe fruit, small red berries, pepper, violet, herbal and balsamic notes. Oak adds nuances of licorice, dark chocolate, leather and fine spices. On the palate it is warm, enveloping, supported by freshness and a well‑defined structure. The finish is long and velvety.

Attems today: history, territory and contemporary vision

With nearly nine centuries of documented history, Attems continues to interpret the Collio with an authentic and contemporary style. Its 44 hectares of vineyards, at an average altitude of 130 meters, are planted with Ribolla Gialla, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay. Since 2000, the estate has been part of the Frescobaldi family, which has enhanced its identity and potential.
