Castel-Frères Acquires Tannico: the Era of the Joint Venture Equally Owned by Campari Group and Moët Hennessy Comes to an End

Monday, October 6, 2025 marks a new chapter in the history of Tannico, Italy’s largest e-commerce platform dedicated to wine, Champagne, and spirits. The company officially becomes part of Castel-Vins, the wine division of Castel-Frères, one of the world’s leading players in the wine industry. The deal involves the acquisition of 100% of the shares held by the joint venture equally owned by Campari Group and Moët Hennessy, who had invested in Tannico in 2020.

A Strategic Sale for Campari and Moët Hennessy

In an official statement, Campari Group announced that the decision to sell its stake was the result of “a thorough strategic review conducted in collaboration with our stakeholders, reflecting a new prioritization in our online business.” This move confirms the Italian group’s intention to focus on higher-margin premium brands and distribution channels, at a time when the online wine market is undergoing a phase of readjustment following the explosive growth seen during the pandemic.

Tannico: From Digital Pioneer to International Partner

Founded in 2012 by Marco Magnocavallo, Tannico quickly became a benchmark for wine in Italy thanks to its highly digital business model, efficient logistics, and a catalog of over 15,000 labels.

In 2024, the company reported revenues of €60 million, slightly down from €64.2 million in 2023 and €68.6 million in 2022, reflecting a market in consolidation.

With this acquisition, Tannico officially joins the Castel-Vins ecosystem, which already includes Vinatis—one of France’s leading wine e-commerce platforms—and the historic network of 500 Nicolas wine shops.

Castel-Frères Bets on Wine E-Commerce with Tannico

The acquisition of Tannico is part of Castel-Frères’ strategy to strengthen its digital presence and expand into the Italian wine segment, which is increasingly appreciated worldwide.

“The integration of Tannico,” explains the French group’s management, “allows us to strengthen our direct relationship with consumers and offer a range of products and services increasingly aligned with their expectations.”

The transaction amount has not been disclosed, but it represents a decisive step in consolidating Castel’s position in the European online wine market, with a particular focus on the growth of Prosecco and Italian sparkling wines.

A Global Group with French Roots

With annual revenues of around €680 million and production of 350 million bottles, Castel-Frères is currently the third-largest wine operator in the world.

The group manages 1,400 hectares of vineyards across Bordeaux, Provence, Loire, and Languedoc, operating through an integrated model that encompasses production, trade, and distribution.

Its activities range from producing estate wines—crafted with respect for the terroir and sustainable practices—to distribution through Maisons de Vin, independent partners, and specialized retail channels.

Its commercial network, which includes Nicolas and Vinatis, reflects a strategy of engaging the end consumer through omnichannel, digital, and personalized experiences.

A New Phase for Italian Online Wine

The acquisition of Tannico by Castel-Vins opens a new scenario for the Italian online wine market, which, after the strong expansion during the pandemic, is now entering a phase of maturity.

The synergy between Tannico’s digital expertise and Castel-Frères’ industrial and distribution strength promises to create a pan-European player capable of connecting producers, distributors, and consumers in a more direct and dynamic way.

“Even in a complex economic context,” emphasizes Castel’s management, “we believe that digital evolution is key to strengthening the relationship with consumers and ensuring that wine plays an increasingly central role in quality e-commerce.”

With its entry into Castel-Vins, Tannico begins a new era: from pioneer of wine e-commerce in Italy to protagonist of the digital internationalization of European wine.
