The 2022 harvest marks an important milestone for Damilano, which debuts its Barolo Docg Castellero. The cru lies “exactly opposite the Cannubi hill,” in a 1.3‑hectare parcel that rises toward Bussia.
The winery chose to elevate this MGA with a dedicated label, recognizing its “extraordinary value… in exposure, soil composition and position.” The result is a pure‑varietal Barolo, produced in just 3,000 bottles and crafted to express with precision the identity of a unique vineyard in the Langhe.

A cru that takes centre stage: exposure, soils and stylistic choices
Castellero faces southeast, a cooler aspect compared to the western slopes. This condition lends elegance, verticality and finesse to the grapes. Damilano opted for a pure‑varietal vinification to deliver an authentic interpretation of the cru, consistent with its tailor‑made approach. The vineyard rests on Sant’Agata Fossili Marls, with a silty‑calcareous structure and high pH (15% sand, 60% silt, 25% clay) at an altitude of around 250 meters — a combination that shapes the wine’s aromatic definition and tannic solidity.

A limited production for a precise identity
The winery deliberately kept production small: only 3,000 bottles. A choice aimed at maximizing the value of the cru and ensuring its recognizability within the Barolo landscape.
In the glass, Castellero 2022 shows a bright, intense garnet colour. The nose opens with dried violet, blood orange and a delicate sweetness of red fruit. The palate is structured and vigorous, supported by firm, well‑defined tannins. The finish is long, savoury and balanced.
A new chapter in Damilano’s mosaic of the Langhe
With Barolo Castellero 2022, Damilano adds a new chapter to its interpretation of the Langhe crus. The goal is clear: to give voice to a vineyard that tells a different story — one of precision, freshness and depth. A wine born from a site of strong personality, now finding its most complete expression in a dedicated label.
