Il Beato: the first Vermouth di Torino crafted from Verduno Pelaverga DOC

Diego Morra launches Il Beato, the first Vermouth di Torino crafted from Verduno Pelaverga DOC, a limited-edition project.

Along this path is where Il Beato is born, the new Vermouth di Torino created by Diego Morra: a project that weaves together territory, memory and contemporary vision through one of the most iconic expressions of Piedmontese tradition. More than a product, Il Beato is a story in a bottle — one that begins in Verduno, the small village symbolic of Barolo and Pelaverga, and arrives in Turin, the historical cradle of Vermouth. It is a dialogue between two deeply connected places, tied also to the personal history of the producer, who built important chapters of his life in Turin.

Pelaverga at the heart of the project: the soul of Verduno

The name of the Vermouth itself recalls a figure deeply linked to Verduno: Blessed Sebastiano Valfrè, born in 1629 and considered instrumental in the spread of the Pelaverga grape across the area.

Verduno today is the village of the Beato, of Pelaverga and of Barolo — a place where wine culture intertwines with local history. From this identity Il Beato takes shape, developing as a project capable of uniting tradition and modernity along an ideal axis between the Langhe and Turin.

At the base of Il Beato is Verduno Pelaverga DOC, the winery’s signature variety and a symbol of the territory. A grape with distinctive traits — freshness, drinkability, floral and spicy nuances — that finds a new interpretation in Vermouth.

The project stems from the desire to enhance this native grape through a different language, one that can also speak to a younger and more curious audience. Vermouth becomes a natural extension of the wine, an alternative way to narrate the territory without betraying its identity.

The recipe, developed over nearly three years together with Francesca and the La Cava distillery, was built with a clear goal: keeping the base wine central, preserving its character while integrating it with a measured balance of botanicals and herbs.

Among these, wormwood, cinchona, orange peel, cardamom, sage and gentian stand out — selected to accompany, not overpower, the expression of Pelaverga.

A contemporary Vermouth di Torino, produced in fewer than 1,000 bottles

Il Beato is a Vermouth di Torino IGP Rosso, with production intentionally limited to just under 1,000 bottles, conceived as an identity-driven and distinctive extension of the winery’s philosophy.

Its organoleptic profile reflects the varietal matrix of the base wine. The nose opens with floral and spicy notes, integrated with hints of medicinal herbs. On the palate, the sip is rich and layered, with a soft entry supported by calibrated sweetness that gives way to a complex aromatic texture.

The mid-palate stands out for its balance between acidity, sweetness and aromatic notes, while the finish — pleasantly bitter and persistent — recalls the tradition of the category while maintaining clarity and drinkability.

Designed to be enjoyed without rules, Il Beato lends itself to multiple occasions: from aperitivo to after-dinner, and into mixology for classic cocktails, in line with a vision of Vermouth as a product of pleasure — free, personal and versatile.

Diego Morra and a label that tells the story of a territory

The visual identity reinforces the bond with the land. The label captures the microclimate and landscape of the Langhe, protected by the Alpine arc, and brings into dialogue symbolic elements such as the Belvedere of Verduno, the Mole Antonelliana and the winery itself, depicted as an integral part of the landscape.

The name Il Beato evokes joy, fullness and positivity, reflecting the vibrant soul of Pelaverga and the convivial nature of the product.

This project fits into the growth path of the Diego Morra winery, located in the heart of the Langhe in Verduno, where tradition and contemporary vision coexist in balance.

The winery’s story began in the early 2000s, when the Piedmontese producer started working among the family vineyards, gradually building a project rooted in identity, quality and respect for the land. Today the estate cultivates around 30 hectares across Verduno, La Morra and Roddi, in some of the most vocated areas for Barolo and native varieties.

The production philosophy is based on low‑impact agriculture, attentive to nature’s rhythms and meticulous grape selection. Alongside Barolo — including the Monvigliero cru — the winery has contributed to elevating Verduno Pelaverga internationally, while also developing projects such as Avantù, a metodo classico rosé made from Nebbiolo.

In this context, Il Beato represents a new chapter: a contemporary interpretation that expands the narrative of the territory through a product capable of uniting wine, culture and innovation.

A Vermouth that does not simply reinterpret a historic category, but brings it back to its most authentic roots: wine, territory and the pleasure of drinking.
