Morellino di Scansano Docg will also be “Superiore”. The Morellino di Scansano Consortium announces the approval of the changes to the production specification, introducing significant innovations. The most significant is the inclusion of the mention “Superiore”, which thus identifies a new typology within the Morellino di Scansano Docg proposal.
“The introduction of the mention Superiore marks the achievement of another important milestone for the enhancement of our Denomination, synonymous with ever greater selection, care and respect in the wine production of our members”, are the words of Bernardo Guicciardini Calamai, president of the Morellino di Scansano Consortium.
“This work is part of the project to strengthen the image and prestige of Morellino di Scansano, both nationally and internationally: we want to continue to raise the quality bar of our Sangiovese della costa, guaranteeing consumers wines that are increasingly identifiable and capable of expressing the potential of this territory to the fullest, offering an even clearer guarantee of quality, authenticity and identity.”
In addition to the new mention “Superiore”, the specification has been updated with other important changes, including the increase in the minimum percentage of Sangiovese to 90% for the “Riserva” type, the reduction of the yield per hectare for the mentions “Superiore” and “Riserva” and an increase in the minimum alcohol content for the latter type.
The changes are now awaiting approval by the competent bodies, confirming the Consortium’s commitment to promoting production that is increasingly attentive to the quality and enhancement of its wine, strengthening its positioning among the great Italian denominations.

When Morellino di Scansano Docg will be “Superiore”
The new “Superiore” mention provides for a reduced maximum yield compared to the Annata version of Morellino di Scansano and requires that the wines be obtained from Sangiovese grapes for at least 85%, with the possibility of using other black grape varieties, non-aromatic, up to a maximum of 15%.
Furthermore, the release for consumption for this category will be permitted only starting from January 1st of the second year following the harvest, favoring a greater maturation and complexity of the wine.
The Superiore will thus present itself with a ruby red color tending towards garnet; to the nose it will be perfumed, ethereal, intense and fine, while to the palate it will be dry, warm and slightly tannic. The minimum alcohol content will be 13% Vol.
