On June 22, 2026, a historic turning point for the Piedmontese wine landscape took place: with the decree of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry, the Consorzio del Nizza Docg was officially established. This step transforms the Associazione Produttori del Nizza, founded in 2002, into a protection body with functions of promotion, enhancement and safeguarding of the denomination.
Thanks to the representativeness requirements achieved, the Consortium will be able to operate erga omnes, extending its activity for the benefit of the entire denomination. At the helm, President Stefano Chiarlo has been confirmed, supported by Vice Presidents Gianni Bertolino and Daniele Chiappone, together with a Board of Directors representing both the historical and contemporary realities of the territory.

A recognition that rewards a united and forward‑looking community
The establishment of the Consorzio del Nizza Docg is not just an institutional step: it is the culmination of a journey that began almost twenty‑five years ago. President Stefano Chiarlo explains it, highlighting the human and collective value of this milestone:
“This achievement crowns the dream of an association born almost twenty‑five years ago, but with very deep roots and a strongly cohesive community of producers.”

The thanks to the institutions is accompanied by an even more heartfelt acknowledgment to the producers, the protagonists of a story built day after day.
“The Consorzio del Nizza DOCG represents a fundamental milestone in a path of growth and ambition of which we are deeply proud,” adds Chiarlo, recalling how the goal is to preserve the original spirit of the Association: a place of dialogue, growth and enhancement of the territory.
The headquarters of the new Consortium will be in Nizza Monferrato, in via Gobetti 5, the beating heart of the denomination. The Board of Directors brings together names that represent the history and evolution of Nizza: from Bava to Coppo, from Cossetti to Tre Secoli, from La Gironda to Vinchio Vaglio, up to Cascina Garitina and Cantina Sociale di Nizza Monferrato. A team that demonstrates the solidity and shared vision of a territory that continues to grow.
Nizza Docg: an identity built over time and ready for new ambitions
The history of Nizza is the result of a long and coherent journey. In 2000, the Nizza sub‑zone was established within Barbera d’Asti Superiore; in 2002, the Associazione Produttori del Nizza took shape; in 2008, Barbera d’Asti obtained Docg status with a more rigorous production code. The turning point came in 2014 with the creation of the Nizza Docg denomination, the introduction of the Riserva and the Vigna mention.
Today, the denomination represents one of the highest expressions of Barbera, thanks to the balance between soils, climate and winemaking tradition. The numbers confirm the strength of the project: around 1 million bottles sold in 2025, a total value of 30 million euros and a consolidated presence in over 40 international markets, with particular focus on Switzerland, Northern Europe, the United Kingdom and North America.
Future prospects are equally ambitious. “Our long‑term goal is to reach a production of 4–5 million bottles. We aim to be an inclusive Consortium, open to anyone who shares our vision.”

A Consortium looking to the future of Monferrato
The new Consorzio del Nizza Docg is born with a clear mission: to consolidate the positioning of the denomination among the great Italian wine excellences, in Italy and worldwide.
Nizza Docg is born in the heart of Monferrato, within the UNESCO site “Vineyard Landscapes of Piedmont: Langhe‑Roero and Monferrato”, where Barbera reaches one of its highest expressions. Today the denomination includes 97 companies, around 1 million bottles sold in 2025, over 180 labels and an export share of 55% in more than 40 markets. With 720 hectares still potentially claimable as Nizza Docg, growth prospects are significant and point toward a future production of 4–5 million bottles.
