OHM2 is the newest addition to the most innovative and revolutionary range of Abbazia di Novacella, launched in 2020 with the aim of exploring production methods that combine progress and tradition. A Piwi wine made from the Souvignier Gris variety, it is the latest addition to the Insolitus line from the historic Isarco Valley winery. Abbazia di Novacella’s pioneering space dedicated to experimentation has been enriched with a new member of the family of fungal-resistant grape varieties.
“Insolitus continues to be an important forum for discussion for Abbazia di Novacella,” emphasizes Abbazia di Novacella Sales Director Werner Waldboth. “It’s a true work in progress, where we seek to fuse our experience, our tradition, and the necessary vision for the future, ready to take on the challenges posed by the changes we are experiencing.”
Abbazia di Novacella’s Insolitus line: experimentation with Piwi grape varieties continues with the new OHM2 Souvignier Gris
OHM2 Souvignier Gris is the new label joining Abbazia di Novacella’s Insolitus line.
“Five years ago, we began this new journey with the Insolitus line with a Piwi grape variety. Now we’ve decided to embark on a second winemaking journey, but with a different variety,” explains Werner Waldboth.
“We’ve chosen Souvignier Gris, an early-ripening variety that’s perfectly suited to the cool climate we enjoy in our vineyards in the Isarco Valley.”

OHM2 Souvignier Gris 2024 Mitterberg IGT comes from vineyards located at 600 meters above sea level in Novacella, on soils rich in permeable moraine deposits with a southeast exposure.
After harvest, fermentation and maturation take place in stainless steel to highlight the distinctive characteristics of this gray-pink grape, vinified as a white wine.
A captivating fruity character emerges in the glass, with aromas reminiscent of apple, peach, and citrus, while on the palate, lively acidity supports a very lean, dynamic, and highly drinkable sip.
The new wine’s name, OHM, refers to the symbol indicating the unit of measurement for electrical resistance, and is the same one used five years ago for the first wine in the Insolitus line, which featured Bronner, also a Piwi variety, an acronym for pilzwiderstandfähige, or fungal-resistant grape varieties.
“We decided to reuse the same name again, but squared, to underscore the continuity of the project, which sees us experimenting with new wines that can have a limited shelf life on the market as well as become permanent additions to our winery’s portfolio,” concludes Werner Waldboth.
The new Souvignier Gris currently represents the ninth wine in the Insolitus line, joining Rosá Lagrein Rosé, Minus, Perlae36 Pas Dosé, Perlae Extra Brut, Amphora, Kabi Riesling, Orchestra, and 6234 Pinot Noir Riserva. Again, in keeping with the philosophy that defines this space, only a limited number of this wine will be produced—1,500 bottles in this case—and distributed exclusively through the Horeca channel.
