Piz Rosé Pinot Noir: Cantina Girlan unveils a new shade of rosé in Alto Adige

An unconventional rosé, where the beauty and fragrance of the fruit take center stage. A truly Pop interpretation in the glass, built on pure pleasure and drinkability. With Piz Rosé Pinot Noir, Cantina Girlan introduces a new reading of Pinot Noir in pink, continuing its work of elevating one of Alto Adige’s most representative grape varieties. This new rosé comes from the highest parcels farmed by the cooperative’s members, located between 550 and 650 meters above sea level in the Oltradige area, and stands as a contemporary expression of freshness, precision and Alpine elegance. The debut vintage, 2025, joins the Vigneti line, which includes only wines sourced from selected parcels in the best subzones.

“Our vision is to work today while thinking about the future of our children,” says Oscar Lorandi, president of Cantina Girlan. “We are a cooperative of 210 families and 240 hectares, and since 1923 we have held together tradition, future and innovation. Our focus remains Alto Adige: we are in Cornaiano, Girlan, and we want to produce wines that reflect the territory — that Alpine freshness opening toward the Mediterranean. We pay close attention to the varieties that give us the greatest satisfaction, such as Pinot Noir and Schiava, which is experiencing a new renaissance. Only a few hectares remain, but in our area there are vines between 65 and 110 years old that produce exceptional wines. As for whites, we play on home turf with Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Sauvignon.”

With Piz Rosé, Cantina Girlan adds a coherent new piece to its interpretation of Pinot Noir, demonstrating how rosé can become a credible and identity‑driven expression even in mountain territories.

Not a stylistic exercise, but a conscious reading of the variety, where altitude, exposure and vinification method work together to create a South Tyrolean rosé that speaks a contemporary language in the glass.

The meaning of “Piz” and Cantina Girlan’s work on high‑altitude terroirs

The name Piz comes from Ladin and means “peak”, a direct reference to the geographical origin of this rosé and to the decision to work with the highest vineyards of Cantina Girlan. These parcels, mostly east‑facing, allow for slow ripening — a key factor in preserving acidity and aromatic finesse.

Over time, Cantina Girlan has progressively expanded its Pinot Noir surface, now reaching around 50 hectares distributed across prized micro‑zones such as Girlan, Pinzon and Mazon, strengthening a style rooted in zonation, precision and territorial identity.

The new Piz Rosé Pinot Noir fits into a broader project studying the interactions between grape variety and terroir. As Oscar Lorandi explains:

“This wine is the result of our ongoing study of how Pinot Noir interacts with the different terroirs of our members’ vineyards, and it fits perfectly within our production philosophy, which aims to make origin and territorial identity perceptible in all our wines. Choosing the highest parcels allows us to deliver sensations of great freshness, drinkability and pleasure in the glass — qualities enhanced by rosé vinification. The goal was to create yet another interpretation of Pinot Noir, extremely contemporary and aligned with market evolution and consumer preferences.”

Piz Rosé Pinot Noir Cantina Girlan in the glass: delicacy and precision

The Pinot Noir grapes destined for Piz Rosé are harvested by hand and brought to the cellar in small crates. After destemming, the presses are filled by gravity, and the must remains in contact with the skins for only a few hours, achieving a pale color and refined aromatic profile.

Ageing takes place in stainless steel tanks on fine lees, without malolactic fermentation, to preserve freshness and tension. Bottling occurs in the spring following harvest.

In the glass, Piz Rosé Pinot Noir 2025 shows a bright salmon‑pink color. The nose reveals clear notes of redcurrant, raspberry and cranberry, while the palate is balanced and harmonious, supported by lively acidity and a sense of lightness that enhances drinkability.

Its gastronomic versatility is broad: perfect as an aperitif, but also ideal with fish appetizers, light Mediterranean cuisine and refined dishes — in line with the winery’s precise, measured style.
