Podere Guardia Grande: new winery in Sardinia for the Veronesi family (Calzedonia)

Official launch for the Veronesi family’s (Oniverse, former Calzedonia) new viticulture project. It is called Podere Guardia Grande and it is a new winery with vineyard in the heart of Sardinia. We are in an area that has remained uncontaminated and wild, near Alghero. Here, where Vermentino, Cannonau and Cagnulari are produced, there will however be no shortage of the opportunity to immerse yourself in the discovery of wine and its secrets, thanks to a structure with a wine shop that can be visited and open to the public starting from the end of June for wine tourism itineraries . The project, signed by the Sardinian studio CasciuRango architects, contemplates the fusion between scenic naturalistic and production aspects: Podere Guardia Grande, in fact, is located on one of the rare promontories from which it is possible to enjoy the view of Capo Caccia, Porto Conte and of the west coast. In this area, the cellar, vineyard areas and agricultural house enjoy a unique scenic component: 25 hectares exposed to the light and breeze of the mistral and salt air on all sides. The interior furnishings bear the signature and color of the Alghero stylist and designer Antonio Marras, with whom the Veronesi family has chosen to collaborate in order to create an even closer synergy with the territory. The structure of the cellar is divided into three floors connected by a circular staircase and not developed in height, to elect the soil as a reliable guardian of the production activities. A choice that renews the promise of respect for the territory, which defines a presence that knows how to be discreet, hidden: a journey into the cellar which thus becomes a journey to the center of Guardia Grande, into its own subsoil.

Podere Guardia Grande, the essence of Sardinia in the bottle

A winery with vineyard in the heart of Sardinia, in Guardia Grande, developed in depth, literally in the ground. Three labels born with the favor of the mistral wind, between Capo Caccia and the bay of Porto Conte.

Podere Guardia Grande is the new viticulture project of the Veronesi family, who have always been deeply passionate about the city of Alghero, which is located on the north-western coast of Sardinia, in an area that has remained uncontaminated and wild, colored by a brick-red clayey soil.

It is a tribute to the beauty and cultural richness of these parts, but above all the desire to produce high quality wines driven by a great respect for nature accompanied by the strong desire to reflect the authenticity and extraordinary peculiarity of the local terroir.

All around is vegetation in constant dialogue with the sea, repopulated where there was a lack of it as a promise to a land that has so much to offer and to which much is owed: vineyards, native aromatic plants, wind and Sardinian nuraghi of limestone, sandstone, trachyte.

Vermentino, Cannonau and Cagnulari are produced here, an indigenous red grape variety typical of the small area north-west of the province of Sassari.

“We will work our vineyards respecting this generous and unique territory, without the use of chemical herbicides, as a consequence of what should now be a normal approach to agriculture,” explains Federico Veronesi, CEO of Podere Guardia Grande. “The priority is to do it according to the principles of sustainability, respect for the territory, dedication to the vineyard: we would like to offer the possibility of discovering the beauty and uniqueness of Sardinia, of the splendid view of Capo Caccia”.

The new wines of the project signed by the Veronesi family in Alghero

The new project signed by the Veronesi family already sees wines produced with the Podere Guardia Grande label: Vermentino di Sardegna Doc (Saldenya), Cannonau di Sardegna (Nascimento) and Cagnulari, or Alghero Cagnulari (L’Alghè).

  • Saldenya: 100% Vermentino di Sardegna (Guardia Grande coast vineyards).

In Alghero, Saldenya means Sardinia. On the nose tropical aromas of pineapple and litchi, grapefruit, chamomile, in a breath of minerality expressed on hydrocarbon and saline perceptions: Saldenya is a wine that tastes of sea and wind.

  • Nascimento: 100% Cannonau (Guardia Grande coast vineyards).

The name is inspired by the “mysterious birth”, as Sebastiano Satta defined the winemaking process. Lively ruby red in colour, it is fruity on the nose, tasting of blackberries, blueberries and blackcurrants on a floral background of roses, violets and juniper berries;

  • Alghè: 100% Cagnulari (Monte Pedrosu vineyards).

It is a more intimate wine, which thrives on characteristics less of the coast but more inland in the Mediterranean scrub. Alghé is a tribute to Alghero, the city of coral. It offers clear perceptions of red fruits, cherries in alcohol, mace, cinnamon and eucalyptus. The Podere Guardia Grande structure: an immersive journey to discover the most authentic Sardinia.
