The Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino enthusiastically welcomes the positive conclusion of the administrative process regarding the expansion of the Rosso di Montalcino DOC Register. This significant step forward represents an important opportunity for the future of the territory and its winemaking excellence.
“The initiative, promoted with determination by the Consortium, has received a warm and timely welcome from the wineries in the area, with the active support of the Tuscany Region, to which we extend our sincere thanks,” said Fabrizio Bindocci, president of the Consortium. “The expansion of the vineyard dedicated to Rosso di Montalcino further strengthens our denomination, allowing us to respond more effectively to the growing demand from both national and international markets.”

Fabrizio Bindocci: “The expansion of the vineyard dedicated to Rosso di Montalcino further strengthens our denomination”
The decision of the Tuscany Region has led to the assignment of 352 hectares of vineyards to 271 wineries, hectares that will be used for the production of the prized Rosso di Montalcino DOC. However, it should be emphasized that the expansion does not imply the planting of new vineyards, but rather the inclusion of land already cultivated with Sangiovese, which cannot yet be claimed within the limited registers. This will allow companies to optimize existing resources, strengthening the bond with the territory without altering its natural balance.
The initiative, the result of a long and careful evaluation process, is part of the broader framework of valorization of the Montalcino wine heritage, and will contribute not only to increasing the production of Rosso di Montalcino DOC, but also to consolidating the positioning of the denomination on global markets, which are increasingly attentive to the quality and origin of the products.
The Assembly of members of the Consortium of Brunello di Montalcino wine had approved the expansion of the claimable surface area for the D.O. last December. The subsequent Board of Directors then ratified the decision. For the DOC vineyard, an increase of 350 hectares was defined from the current 519.7, with an additional tolerance of 4% which brings the total to 364. The additional production potential of Rosso di Montalcino will therefore be just over 3 million bottles (0.75 liters) to be added to the current average of 3.6 million units per year found in the last five years. This latter figure, considered by the Consortium to be too light in the face of an international demand that is increasingly interested in the wines of the denomination.
