Santa Margherita Wine Group turns 90 and changes name: now it’s Herita Marzotto Wine Estates
Founded in 1935 by Count Gaetano Marzotto in Fossalta di Portogruaro (Ve), the former Santa Margherita Gruppo Vinicolo, now Herita Marzotto Wine Estates, is still firmly in the hands of the third generation of the family. For one of the most important Italian wine players, which generates a turnover of over 255 million euros. Among the pioneers of the Prosecco phenomenon with the sparkling wine production of the Glera grape on the hills of Valdobbiadene since 1952, its history is linked above all to the worldwide success of Pinot Grigio as we know it today.
Today a new Corporate Name, Herita, which symbolizes the legacy (“heritage”, in English) of what has been achieved so far as Santa Margherita Gruppo Vinicolo.
Over 760 hectares of production along the boot, organically managed or Sqnpi certified, in some of the most iconic areas of Italian winemaking: Eastern Veneto, Conegliano-Valdobbiadene, Trentino-Alto Adige, Lugana, Franciacorta, Chianti Classico, Maremma and Sardinia. To these are added over 40 hectares of production in the Willamette Valley in Oregon. Also in the United States, with headquarters in Miami, the controlled import company Santa Margherita USA has been operating since 2016, with the task of developing the business in the first market in the world not only for these 10 estates, but also for other renowned independent Italian companies.
“These 90 years that we are celebrating fall at a very particular moment for the world of wine, Italian but not only. Geopolitical uncertainties, generational changes in consumers, tensions over duties affecting various markets, require Italian wineries to make important choices and equally strategic medium-long term visions”, underlines Andrea Conzonato, CEO of Herita Marzotto Wine Estates. “Challenges that are far from new for those who have been following this business for 90 years: as Herita, we are resolutely confirming our investment program – which has never stopped even in the face of the turbulence of the last five years – and the choice to further develop our presence abroad, with a particular focus on the United States, where we are already strongly present not only on the commercial front but also on the production side”.
