The Sicilia DOC Wine Protection Consortium ends 2025 with strong results, reaffirming its position as a leading force in the Italian and international wine industry. This year marked a renewed focus on native grape varieties and the rediscovery of Sicily’s historic cultivars—a heritage that embodies the island’s unique identity.
Harvest 2025: Back to Stability
After two challenging vintages, the 2025 harvest returned to regular production levels, with approximately 3 million hectoliters harvested across 97,000 hectares of vineyards. This achievement confirms Sicily among Italy’s top wine regions and underscores its ability to combine biodiversity and sustainability.
“The 2025 harvest signals a return to normalcy, reinforcing Sicily’s role as a key player in Italian viticulture,” says Camillo Pugliesi, Director of the Consortium. “On international markets, the U.S. remained stable despite trade complexities, while Asia showed growing interest in Sicilian wines. In response, the Consortium strengthened its presence with targeted promotional and communication initiatives.”
Grillo and Lucido Sicilia DOC: Driving Global Trends
White wines dominated 2025, with Grillo and Lucido (Catarratto) leading the charge. Lucido, covering 29,000 hectares, is Sicily’s most widespread white grape. Its versatility and intra-varietal diversity allow it to thrive in coastal, hilly, and mountainous areas—ideal for producing fresh, ready-to-drink whites, structured wines for aging, and premium sparkling bases.
The recently concluded “Vista Lucido” project showcased this potential, while micro-vinifications of over 70 native varieties revealed 7–8 biotypes of particular interest, promising to enrich Sicily’s wine portfolio further.
Looking Ahead: Strategic Plans for 2026
The Consortium is set to launch a comprehensive communication and promotion plan, with a major highlight at Vinitaly 2026. Activities will include participation in leading trade fairs and consumer events worldwide, designed to present Sicily as an authentic wine continent through immersive experiences blending territory, culture, and enological style.
Today, Sicilia DOC represents over 7,000 winegrowers and 500 bottlers, producing more than 80 million bottles—a modern expression of a land with millennia of history.
