The Custoza Riserva debuts: what wine is it?

The Custoza Riserva is ready to arrive on the tables of all lovers of great white wines. A new nuance of the Venetian Doc that debuts on the market, for the first time since the approval of the mention in 2019, with the aim of demonstrating the elegance and evolutionary potential of one of the symbolic productions of Verona. An innovation strongly desired and shared among the producers, who chose to wait until 2024 to present Custoza Riserva on the market, to highlight a propensity for constant qualitative growth on the part of the Denomination. Here’s what it is and what changes in the glass.

What changes in the glass with the Custoza Riserva

The new version of Custoza is a white wine that demonstrates the maturity of the Veronese denomination and its propensity for constant qualitative growth. The Riserva mention is, in fact, only foreseen for DOC wines subjected to a minimum aging of 12 months.

What makes Custoza Riserva unique are characteristics such as elegance, freshness, gastronomic potential and the ability to be enriched over time with complex and fascinating notes. For a goal achieved after long work of technical research and in-depth knowledge of the terroir, which began with Custoza Superiore, a wine whose production has more than tripled in the last five years.

At the moment, Custoza Riserva is produced by companies recognized for their commitment and affection for the Denomination, who work with great attention, from the vineyard to the bottle, and who have decided to invest in this project as an opportunity to affirm their own style and his own vision of the territory and the grapes.

Custoza Riserva is an expression that goes beyond what is already known about the Venetian DOC, whose overall production today stands at around 11 million bottles, and which demonstrates how this wine can withstand the challenge of time.

“The Consortium is a dynamic and compact reality and, with the consent of all the producers, it was decided to go out on the market now, despite the modification of the specifications dating back to 2019”, explains the president Roberta Bricolo (in the cover photo). “Custoza Riserva enhances the human factor and the entrepreneurial vision of the company. With this mention we move from the focus on the product to that on the producer who signs it, who puts in his work and his emotions. A value that is expressed by those who follow the entire production chain, from the vineyard to the bottle. The Reserves, together with the Superiore, are the highest expressions of Custoza, the result of research, knowledge of the terroir and awareness”.

Custoza, a denomination approved in 1971, is produced between the municipalities of Sommacampagna, Villafranca di Verona, Valeggio sul Mincio, Peschiera del Garda, Lazise, Castelnuovo del Garda, Pastrengo, Bussolengo and Sona on a total area of 1400 hectares of vineyards.

The peculiarity is given by the blend of three native varieties, which the producers interpret with a true art of assembly. This allows us to enhance the delicate, floral and fruity aroma of the Garganega, the characteristic color of the Friulian Tocai and the slightly aromatic scents of the Bianca Fernanda, as well as the peculiar characteristics of the other white grape varieties grown in the area.
