The Morellino di Scansano Docg takes a decisive step in its evolution: the “Superiore” designation has been officially published in the Gazzetta Ufficiale, making effective the amendments to the production regulations approved by the Consortium Assembly in 2025. The announcement was made during Chianti Lovers & Rosso Morellino 2026, the annual preview event of Tuscan wines, where Morellino presented itself with 13 wineries and 22 labels available for tasting by journalists, trade professionals and international buyers.
Guicciardini Calamai: “A major achievement for the entire denomination”
Consortium President Bernardo Guicciardini Calamai highlighted the significance of this milestone:
“The publication in the Gazzetta Ufficiale marks an important achievement for the entire denomination. With the Superiore designation, we strengthen our path of enhancement, continuing to focus on greater selection and identity. It is a concrete signal of our commitment to investing in quality and in the distinctiveness of our coastal Sangiovese, offering the market a guarantee of consistency and value.”
What defines the new Morellino di Scansano Superiore
The new Superiore category positions itself between the Annata and the Riserva, giving formal identity to a production style already present in the area but never codified. The regulations require a minimum of 85% Sangiovese, with the possibility of using non‑aromatic red varieties up to 15%. Maximum yields are lower than those of the Annata, while ageing is longer, with release not permitted before January 1 of the second year following the harvest.
This technical framework aims to enhance structure, complexity and depth, while preserving the freshness and balance that define Morellino di Scansano. The result is a wine that stands out clearly and competitively on both national and international markets.
On this point, Guicciardini Calamai added:
“With the Superiore, we are not creating a new wine. We chose to give identity to a style that already existed: many member wineries have long produced a wine positioned between Annata and Riserva, but it had never been formally identified or described. With this step, we make its identity official.”
An announcement at a strategic moment for the Docg
Presenting this new category at Chianti Lovers & Rosso Morellino 2026, in front of an international and highly specialized audience, reinforces the positioning of Morellino di Scansano as a dynamic denomination, capable of reading the market and strengthening its narrative.
Today, the Docg counts 219 members, representing 98.2% of total production, across a territory of more than 4,400 hectares of vineyards, over 2,000 of which are dedicated to Brunello (data referenced from the previous section of the document). Morellino continues to gain visibility among the coastal Tuscan Dop wines, with an increasingly recognized production identity.

The introduction of the Superiore designation offers producers a new competitive tool and gives consumers a clearer understanding of the nuances of Sangiovese grown in the Scansano area. Greater selection, longer ageing and a deeper flavour profile enrich the qualitative spectrum of the Docg, strengthening its recognizability and market positioning.
For the Consortium, this official recognition is the result of a shared journey that reflects the producers’ desire to evolve without losing their roots — a balance that now becomes regulation, protection and added value for the entire denomination.
