Tommasi Family Estates consolidates its presence in Puglia, expanding the Masseria Surani project. The announcement comes directly from the Veronese family: following Claudio Quarta’s retirement, the transition to Tenuta Eméra in Lizzano (Taranto) and Cantina Moros in Guagnano (Lecce) has been finalized.
“This acquisition is a great opportunity for our family,” emphasizes Giancarlo Tommasi, winemaker and technical director of Tommasi Family Estates. “Masseria Surani is now strengthened with a new winemaking and bottling cellar, allowing us to expand our winemaking heritage to more than 800 hectares throughout Italy. Alongside this expansion, the wine tourism project linked to Masseria Surani is also growing, in iconic locations of authentic Puglia, completing the mosaic of hospitality in our wineries, from Valpolicella Classica to Montalcino and Vulture in Basilicata.”
The Tommasi family has been present in Puglia since 2012 with Masseria Surani in Manduria, in the heart of the Primitivo DOC denomination, with 55 hectares of vineyards at Tenuta Espéra, to which 45 hectares in Lizzano, adjacent to Tenuta Eméra, were subsequently added. Thanks to the friendship between the two families, some of the Masseria Surani wines have been vinified here for several years.

After a long and distinguished career, Claudio Quarta announces his retirement, transferring his estates to the Tommasi family. His winemaking journey began in 2005, when he decided to leave his career as a researcher and pharmaceutical entrepreneur in the United States to return to Italy and pursue his great passion for wine: it was a return to his roots, to the Salento region of his childhood. His daughter Alessandra, after an international education and a career away from the world of wine, chose to embrace her father’s project in 2012, making a decisive contribution to its growth.
“I had been leading the company since 2023,” explains Alessandra Quarta, “and amidst the challenges of global markets, I was looking for a solid foundation to continue growing. I am confident that, together with the Tommasi family, we will be able to continue developing the project begun by my father and make it flourish; creating new opportunities for the region with a sustainable perspective and an ever-increasing awareness of its value.”
The Tommasi Family Estates’ Apulian portfolio is now expanded and complete under the Masseria Surani brand, which includes: Tenuta Espéra in Manduria, the historic heart of the estate, where exclusive labels designed for restaurants and perfectly express the region’s identity are created; Tenuta Eméra in Lizzano, dedicated to Primitivo DOC, Fiano, and Negroamaro Rosé; and Cantina Moros in Guagnano, custodian of the eponymous Salice Salentino DOC Riserva.
With this latest acquisition, the Veronese family’s vision of the Mediterranean project—wines capable of expressing territorial identity and tradition on an international scale—is strengthened with an increasingly consolidated presence in the three iconic terroirs of Southern Italy: Salento with Masseria Surani, Vulture in Basilicata with Paternoster, and Etna in Sicily with the jewel in the crown, Ammura.
