In the splendor of the Dolomites, on 11 June Vigilius Mountain Resort hosted the 21st edition of the Trofeo Schiava, the annual event dedicated to all enthusiasts of this particular wine production typical of Alto Adige which rewards the best local labels.

Sommeliers, experts but also simple enthusiasts gathered at high altitude to participate in the award ceremony for the best Schiava labels produced by local wineries.

Born from an idea by Ulrich Ladurner, owner of Vigilius Mountain Resort, Günther Hölzl, wine shopkeeper from Merano, and Othmar Kiem, food and wine journalist, for over 20 years the event has celebrated the characteristics of Vernatsch wine (i.e. Schiava), strictly linked to the territory and its tradition which at the same time represents the new, lightness and well-being.

A type of autochthonous and indigenous South Tyrolean grape for over 1,000 years, the Schiava variety gives life to uncomplicated and “drinkable” wines, with a rather light red color and light notes: the low concentration of tannin not only makes it pleasantly delicate and fruity, but places it among the red wines with the lowest acidity value.

The labels that were awarded as “Vernatsch of the Year 2024” for the Classic Category are the Grauvernatsch Alto Adige Doc 2023 by Muri-Gries, while for the Selection Category was awarded the Der Pfannenstiel St. Magdalener Classico Alto Adige Doc 2018 of Pfannenstielhof.

The regional winners for the Classic category were won by the Leuchtenburg Lago di Caldaro classical superior Alto Adige Doc 2023 by Cantina Kaltern, the Meranerin Alto Adige Meranese Doc 2023 by Popphof, the Grauvernatsch Alto Adige Doc 2023 by Muri-Gries and the St. Magdalener Classico Alto Adige Doc 2023 by Ansitz Waldgries.

Taking home the title of regional winners for the Selection category were the Novis Lago di Caldaro Classico Superiore Alto Adige Doc 2023 from Ritterhof, the Terrass Meraner Hügel Südtirol Doc 2022 from Haidenhof, the Missianer Vernatsch Alto Adige Doc 2023 from Cantina St. Pauls and the Der Pfannenstiel St. Magdalener Classic Alto Adige Doc 2018 from Pfannenstielhof.
