In Badia di Morrona, on the hills of Terricciola, Sangiovese has always been a prince of vines and the VignaAlta cru, now celebrating its 30th anniversary, is its noblest interpreter.
Filippo Gaslini Alberti, head of the family business, says:
“The VignaAlta vineyard covers the highest hill in our vineyard park. Here the combination of soils and ventilation is special and for this reason since 1994 we have never stopped paying special attention to this plot, selecting the Sangiovese bunches with ever greater awareness and trying to bottle their most authentic voice”.
Why the VignaAlta di Badia di Morrona cru is so special
The vineyard is located at about 250 meters above sea level, faces south and is located on soil rich in sand, white stones called Marmettole di Carrara and fossils dating back to the Pliocene and Pleistocene, a combination that gives the wine a very peculiar elegance and minerality.
Furthermore, here the vines enjoy a microclimate influenced by sea currents that are able to mitigate the high summer temperatures and, when it rains, to constantly dry the rows, allowing the technical team to bring perfectly healthy and ripe grapes to the cellar.
“2020 was a good year for nature and we managed the alternation of sun and rain in the best possible way in the 15/20 days before the harvest. So we harvested splendid bunches of Sangiovese at the end of September”, reports the winemaker Adolfo Benvenuti.
In the cellar, the vinification of VignaAlta 2020 involved fermentation in steel, maturation for 24 months in 25 hl French oak barrels and 3 months of rest in cement. This was followed by the bottling of approximately 8,000 examples.
