The Anteprima del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano opened with a verdict that made headlines: 4.5 out of 5 stars for the Vino Nobile 2023, the new vintage arriving on the market this year. The result was announced during the first press‑only day of the event, held last weekend, and was accompanied by a technical analysis highlighting finesse, balance, and an aromatic profile of great intensity.
The day also featured the presentation of an important study by the Santa Chiara Lab at the University of Siena, which portrays a territory where over 80% of wineries are family‑run, able to turn multifunctionality into a strategic asset for tourism, sustainability, and economic growth.
While the GrifoNobile Award this year went to the President of the Tuscany Region, Eugenio Giani, the Anteprima program will continue on 22–23 February with the opening to trade operators and enthusiasts.

A 4.5‑Star Vintage: The Profile of Vino Nobile 2023
The commission of oenologists, sommeliers, and restaurateurs awarded 4.5 stars to Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2023. According to oenologist Lorenzo Landi, who also presented the progress of the latest harvest, the wines show:
intense colors
- good aromatic expression
- structure supported by acidity and medium tannins
- medium‑high alcohol levels
Analytically, the vintage shows average values for color intensity and hue, acidity, pH, extracts, and polyphenols. The result is a wine that focuses on finesse and balance, two elements that define its personality.
Multifunctionality, Tourism, and Sustainability: The Montepulciano Model According to the Santa Chiara Lab Study
One of the highlights of the day was the presentation of the study conducted by Santa Chiara Lab in collaboration with the Consorzio del Vino Nobile. The research highlights a territory that has evolved by integrating agriculture, hospitality, and innovation.
Key findings include:
- 80% of businesses are owner‑managed, and 84% are family‑run, ensuring continuity, identity, and transmission of values.
- Multifunctionality is now structural: hospitality, tastings, and direct sales can represent up to 80–90% of revenue for some wineries.
- The territory operates under a Tourism-Led Growth model, transforming wineries into true centers of cultural and relational production.
- Agriturismi are present in 75% of companies, tastings in 50%, and restaurant services in 35%.
- Sustainability remains a cornerstone, strengthened by the Equalitas territorial certification, the first of its kind in Italy.
“Multifunctionality is a key lever for the future of the territory,” emphasized Andrea Rossi, President of the Consortium, highlighting how tradition, innovation, and tourism hospitality intertwine to meet the challenges of the global market.
