Wines of Sicilia Doc Consortium: a Year’s Review Focused on Research and International Promotion

2024: Un Anno di Sfide e Successi per il Consorzio di Tutela Vini DOC Sicilia"

The year 2024 marked a key moment for the Wines of Sicilia Doc Consortium, which, despite a complex global environment characterized by declining wine consumption and climate challenges, managed to reaffirm the vitality of its production system. The sector’s resilience and strength became evident, supported by consistent efforts in various key areas such as quality, territorial identity, and international promotion. “2024 was undoubtedly an important test for us, especially considering the significant drop in the 2023 harvest. In a global context marked by high instability, the Sicilia Doc reaffirmed its role as a benchmark, guided by essential values such as quality, targeted promotion, and constant research, all centered around the key concept of sustainability. Every challenge was met with commitment and strategic vision, enhancing the work of our winemakers and producers,” stated Antonio Rallo, President of the Wines of Sicilia Doc Consortium.

The data highlights the strength of the path undertaken: in 2024, 564,917.60 hectoliters were bottled, marking a slight decrease of 5% compared to 2023. These figures, while reflecting the complexity of the context, confirm the adaptability and resilience of Sicilia Doc production.

The production scale provided further insights. Despite the decline compared to 2023, the data regarding Sicilia Doc sparkling wines and rosés underscores the growing market interest in these categories, celebrated for their quality and distinctive identity. This dynamism demonstrates the ability of Sicilia Doc labels to authentically and flexibly interpret market trends, laying the groundwork for increasing interest beyond national borders.

Wines of Sicilia Doc Consortium has significantly strengthened its presence in foreign markets, where the value and quality of Sicilian wines have garnered an increasingly attentive and passionate audience. Promotional activities have spotlighted Sicilia Doc wines through masterclasses, walk-around tastings, and seminars. These unique events provided opportunities to engage with enthusiasts, wine lovers, buyers, and journalists, allowing them to experience the distinctive qualities of a region rich in excellence.

Crowning its initiatives, 2024 stood out as a pivotal year for scientific research, a cornerstone of the Consortium’s commitment. “The 2024 harvest data clearly highlights how crucial it is to continue investing in research, particularly in developing clones more resistant to diseases exacerbated by climate change. This year, more than ever, we have felt the urgency to make sustainability a fundamental principle of our viticulture. Climate change has impacted us profoundly, and as a Consortium, we are committed to intensifying our efforts in research and innovation to mitigate its effects. This is a testament to the resilience and value of our territory and our winemakers,” stated Giuseppe Figlioli, oenologist, Consortium Board Member, and research project coordinator. “The research activities undertaken, in collaboration with the University of Palermo, are yielding significant results. Projects such as Germoplasma aim to preserve and enhance native grape varieties, providing winemakers with practical tools to tackle the challenges of climate change. Among the most notable projects are Bi.Vi.Si. and Vista Lucido, both focused on promoting vine biodiversity and advancing native grape varieties.”

The year 2024 has left the Wines of Sicilia Doc Consortium with the assurance of a solid path forward and the ambition to go even further, looking now to 2025, a year in which Sicilian wine is set to gain even greater prominence on the international stage.
