At the 2025 Benvenuto Brunello Preview, Poggio Antico unveiled the new vintages of its most emblematic wines: Brunello di Montalcino 2021 and Vigna i Poggi 2021. These are two complementary interpretations of Sangiovese—born from the same terroir yet expressing distinct personalities—revealing the authentic soul of the southwestern Montalcino plateau.
With vineyards planted above 550 meters, Poggio Antico is the only winery in the appellation with an estate entirely at high altitude, ensuring freshness, purity, and aromatic precision.
The 2021 Vintage in Montalcino: Altitude‑Driven Balance and Identity for Poggio Antico
The 2021 growing season was marked by harmonious climatic conditions, resulting in slow, complete ripening.
“An unusually cold winter and spring delayed budbreak. Abundant spring rainfall helped the vines regain balance between vegetative and productive growth—an essential condition for polyphenolic accumulation and perfect ripening,” explains Pier Giuseppe D’Alessandro, General Manager.
“The 2021 vintage plays on the balance between immediacy and depth. Our task is to maintain our own style rather than follow trends, and to keep emphasising our identity.
A New Commercial Strategy for Poggio Antico
After exiting the Place de Bordeaux in 2024, Poggio Antico has adopted a direct distribution model, closer to key markets and consumer needs.
“That decision now allows us to introduce this new vintage to markets with much greater awareness,” says Riccardo Bogi, Sales & Marketing Director.
“We understand our partners better and have a clearer sense of actual consumption dynamics in a challenging period for the sector.”
Brunello di Montalcino 2021: The Voice of the Estate
The Brunello 2021 is crafted from a harmonious blend of parcels—each contributing altitude, exposure, and ancient soils of galestro and limestone.
“The 2021 Brunello has the solidity expected from the estate’s most representative wine,” Bogi comments.
It will be the key driver for strengthening Poggio Antico’s international presence in 2026, particularly in strategic markets.
Vigna i Poggi 2021: The Estate’s Highest Expression
Now in its third vintage, Vigna i Poggi confirms itself as Poggio Antico’s cru, delivering a Brunello that is precise, vertical, and defined by elegance rather than power.
“Vigna i Poggi is the culmination of every element of our work—a project that demands patience and boldness, and one in which we place great confidence,” says D’Alessandro.
For high‑end markets—the UK, Japan, Switzerland, and North America—it will serve as a key reference point.
“The 2021 is not just a new release; it marks the start of a new commercial cycle. It is a Brunello that speaks clearly,” concludes Bogi.
