A New Era in Oakville: Robert Mondavi Winery Reopens Its Transformed Estate

Robert Mondavi Winery celebrates its 60th anniversary with the grand reopening of its transformed Oakville estate.

Timed to its 60th anniversary, Robert Mondavi Winery has officially reopened its historic Oakville estate after a three‑year transformation. Starting April 20th, visitors can now book a range of new tasting and tour experiences inside a fully redesigned destination that includes a new hospitality wing, expanded indoor‑outdoor spaces, enhanced culinary areas, and state‑of‑the‑art winemaking facilities. The reopening also marks the debut of a limited‑edition 60th Anniversary Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from standout blocks of To Kalon and Wappo Hill Vineyards.

A Vision Renewed: Architecture, Landscape, and Winemaking Reimagined

The transformation honours Robert Mondavi’s pioneering spirit by balancing preservation with progress. Cliff May’s iconic arch and tower have been carefully restored, while new architectural and landscape elements—led by Aidlin Darling Design and Surfacedesign—create a deeper connection between guests, the vineyards, and the Napa Valley landscape. A new inverted gable canopy anchors a series of terraces, tasting rooms, and gathering areas with sweeping vineyard views. Nearby, a new culinary building with an indoor‑outdoor veranda expands the winery’s food and wine program, rooted in the surrounding gardens. A linear water feature, inspired by traditional agricultural aqueducts, runs through the south wing and reinforces the estate’s commitment to sustainable water stewardship.

Inside, BAMO’s interior design introduces warm, intimate environments shaped by the textures and colours of the Mayacamas Mountains and To Kalon Vineyard. Original elements—including hand‑painted tiles by Margrit Mondavi—have been preserved and integrated alongside works from the Mondavi collection. Materials from earlier structures were repurposed throughout the estate, creating continuity between past and present.

At the heart of the redesign is the new To Kalon Cellar. Now certified organic by California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF), To Kalon Vineyard produces fruit of exceptional purity and balance. The cellar features optical sorting, gravity‑flow systems, and temperature‑controlled fermentation and barrel spaces, allowing for smaller, more precise vinification. This approach supports wines that express both immediacy and long‑term age‑worthiness.

Experiences That Bring Guests Closer to the Land

The transformation extends beyond architecture. Surfacedesign’s landscape vision draws from the geological forces that shaped To Kalon and the broader Napa Valley—tectonic shifts, volcanic activity, and sedimentary deposits. Pathways, plantings, and terraces guide guests through an experience rooted in the relationship between viticulture and environment.

The north wing now houses production, private tastings, and immersive experiences. The To Kalon Collective introduces three dedicated tasting spaces featuring wines from Robert Mondavi Winery To Kalon Vineyard Company, Schrader Cellars, and Double Diamond. The estate’s bell tower has been reimagined as the Tower Library, an intimate tasting room offering a new perspective on the winery’s history and wines.

Visitors can now reserve a full range of experiences, including guided cellar tours, curated tastings, and walking tours of the property. Highlights include the Pioneer Tasting, the Visionary Tasting focused on terroir across the Estates collection, and the Legend Tasting and Tour featuring the winery’s most prestigious Reserve wines. Reservations are available through the winery’s website and Tock.

A Legacy Strengthened for the Next 60 Years

Founded in 1966, Robert Mondavi Winery has long been a benchmark for Napa Valley fine wine. Under the leadership of winemaker Kurtis Ogasawara, the team continues to refine its approach with greater precision each vintage. To Kalon Vineyard remains the heart of the winery’s Napa Valley, Estate, and Reserve programs, widely regarded as one of North America’s premier sites for Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc.

The multi‑year transformation reinforces the winery’s role as a defining luxury destination in Napa Valley, uniting sustainable viticulture, farm‑to‑bottle craftsmanship, and a renewed architectural vision. With its reopening, Robert Mondavi Winery enters a new chapter-one that honours its heritage while shaping its future.
