Dom Pérignon Vintage 2018: the Harmony of Champagne According to Vincent Chaperon

Dom Pérignon unveils the new Vintage 2018. An exceptional year shaped by sunshine and Vincent Chaperon’s vision of Champagne

Few vintages in the history of Dom Pérignon have benefited from climatic conditions as favorable as those of 2018. A growing season marked by constant sunshine, an almost perfect water balance and exceptional grape ripening offered the Maison ideal raw material for creating its new Millésime. This is how Dom Pérignon Vintage 2018 was born, now making its debut: the first Millésime that fully expresses the vision of Chef de Cave Vincent Chaperon. More mineral, more saline, more luminous and deeper, this Champagne interprets the Maison’s creative ambition through an unprecedented balance between fruit maturity, precision and tension, transforming an extraordinary harvest into a true manifesto of harmony.

Dom Pérignon Vintage 2018: the perfect vintage

For Dom Pérignon, every Millésime is a unique creative exercise. The Maison produces only vintage Champagne, taking on the risk of completely renouncing the declaration of a Vintage when the harvest does not meet the desired standards.

2018, however, represented the exact opposite.

The entire vine growing cycle unfolded in an almost ideal balance: a mild, rainy winter ensured optimal water reserves, while spring and summer saw uninterrupted sunshine. Spring sunlight hours were 25% above average, and summer temperatures even surpassed the records set in 2003.

Rainfall patterns also proved perfect. After an initial phase of abundant water availability, the vines gradually experienced slight stress during veraison, a condition that favored qualitative concentration of the grapes without compromising their balance.

The result was an extraordinary harvest, both in quantity and quality, with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir reaching levels of ripeness never recorded before.

The fifth August harvest and Vincent Chaperon’s first signature

2018 enters the Maison’s history for another reason as well.

It was the fifth August harvest after those of 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2017, but above all the earliest ever undertaken by Dom Pérignon. In Ambonnay, the first grapes, with a potential alcohol of 12% Vol., were picked as early as August 17.

This unprecedented precocity also represented one of the first true tests for Vincent Chaperon, who with the 2018 Vintage was called to declare his first year as Chef de Cave of the Maison.

Reflecting on those days, Chaperon recounts:

“As far as decisions about the harvest were concerned, there was a feeling of obviousness, it was exhilarating. It really felt like beginner’s luck.”

The experience gained in previous early harvests allowed the new Chef de Cave to develop a precise strategy: push Chardonnay ripening to the maximum while maintaining greater balance in the picking of Pinot Noir.

The abundant yields also helped naturally moderate the richness of the berries, compensating for the low acidity typical of the vintage.

Dom Pérignon Vintage 2018: a new style built on minerality, fruit and salinity

According to Vincent Chaperon, the 2018 Vintage represents a true stylistic evolution for Dom Pérignon.

Compared to previous vintages, greater minerality, sweeter fruit, more pronounced salinity and an even more refined texture emerge.

As the Chef de Cave summarizes:

“A more mature structure, revealed through the territory and the space this wine occupies in the mouth.”

The Maison describes a wine that is “broader, deeper, longer,” capable of unfolding like a drape that progressively opens in the glass.

Eight years of waiting to reach harmony

For Dom Pérignon, time is an integral part of creation. Each Vintage undergoes a long maturation on the lees in the cellars, during which it develops the complexity that is one of the hallmarks of the Dom Pérignon style.

For the 2018 Vintage, this process lasted around eight years, the time needed for the wine to achieve the balance the Maison defines as its aesthetic ideal.

The goal has always remained the same: to pursue harmony capable of moving through precision, intensity, tactile sensation, minerality, complexity, completeness and a distinctly recognizable expressive persistence.

Dom Pérignon Vintage 2018: what the glass reveals

In the glass, the new Vintage 2018 appears immediately luminous and radiant.

The aromatic profile evokes a full, almost Mediterranean summer, where a ripe orchard intertwines with tropical suggestions of golden kiwi and mango, accompanied by vegetal notes reminiscent of a summer salad, ivy and balsamic plants.

The palate is likely the most surprising aspect.

The attack is broad and enveloping, almost tactile, but gradually the precision of the assemblage lightens the structure, transforming it into an increasingly ethereal texture.

The wine “wraps the palate like a glove,” as the Maison describes this evolution, maintaining a creamy consistency capable of combining tension and completeness.

The generosity of the harvest imparts a particular sense of harmony, where every element of the assemblage seems to naturally find its place.

The finish continues to open without interruption, progressively expanding the perception of length and revealing a presence that Dom Pérignon simply defines as “unprecedented.”

Dom Pérignon’s philosophy: one year, one story

The 2018 Vintage once again confirms the philosophy that distinguishes Dom Pérignon from any other Maison.

Every bottle tells exclusively the story of a single year’s harvest, without compromises and without the possibility of correction through multi-vintage blending.

It is a radical choice, which requires the Maison to accept the possibility of not declaring a vintage when conditions do not allow it.

In the case of 2018, however, nature offered Vincent Chaperon extraordinary raw material to shape a Champagne that perfectly embodies his vision for the Maison: more mineral, more saline, more luminous and profoundly harmonious.

A Vintage destined to become one of the benchmarks of Dom Pérignon’s recent history, demonstrating how time, terroir and an unrepeatable harvest can be transformed into one of the most complete expressions of contemporary Champagne.
