Sixty-six years after its foundation, Cantina Tollo has chosen to continue investing in the territory that has shaped its growth. The wine group from the Teatina area has announced the acquisition of 133 new hectares of vineyards planted with native varieties, strengthening its social base and bringing its total vineyard holdings to 2,490 hectares. This operation goes beyond a simple expansion of production capacity and fits into a long-term vision built on supporting small growers, protecting the rural landscape, and promoting new generations.
Cantina Tollo’s vineyard holdings continue to grow
The acquisition concerns vineyards planted mainly with Montepulciano, Pecorino, Trebbiano and Passerina, located across several areas in the provinces of Chieti, Pescara and Teramo, with smaller presences in Molise and Apulia. Most of the plots lie in hilly zones, at altitudes reaching 350–400 meters above sea level.
With this operation, the group’s vineyard area increases from 2,357 to 2,490 hectares, further consolidating Cantina Tollo’s position among the leading players in the Italian wine sector.
The Vigneto Avanzato project at the heart of the strategy
The newly acquired plots belong to small growers who will join a system built around Vigneto Avanzato, the project developed by Cantina Tollo to rethink the traditional cooperative model.
The initiative introduces a remuneration system based on hectares farmed rather than on the quantity of grapes delivered. This approach provides growers with greater economic stability and is supported by access to advanced technologies and innovative tools supplied by the company.

The operation takes on even greater significance as it coincides with the cooperative’s 66th anniversary.
“Cantina Tollo is celebrating 66 years of history these days,” explains Gianluca Orsini, president of the group, which includes Cantina Tollo, Feudo Antico, Auramadre and Borgo Venna. “In 1960, a group of visionaries founded our cooperative with the aim of giving a future to a territory that was gradually depopulating. What was ‘tomorrow’ for them is ‘today’ for us, and it is our responsibility to think about the days to come. The acquisition of new hectares looks precisely in this direction: we reinvest here to allow new generations to remain and take care of a place where viticulture and wine have been present for centuries, intertwined with our culture and local traditions.”
The expansion of vineyard holdings confirms a strategy that goes beyond production. Cantina Tollo complements its work in the vineyards with ongoing cultural promotion, collaborating with local institutions and associations. Among the initiatives supported are the Cantina Tollo Award within the Vasto d’Autore Festival, participation in the Macondo Festival of Narration, and support for Pescasseroli Legge, directed by Dacia Maraini.
This commitment strengthens the bond between wine and cultural life in Abruzzo, helping to enhance the region’s overall identity.
Cantina Tollo today
Cantina Tollo currently markets around 14 million bottles per year and counts approximately 625 members. Its vineyards stretch from the coastal hills to the foothills of the Maiella, in a climate marked by strong temperature variations and conditions particularly favorable to viticulture.
Production is strongly focused on native varieties, including Montepulciano, Trebbiano, Pecorino, Passerina, Maiolica and Cococciola, with constant attention to experimentation both in the vineyard and in the cellar.
The group’s labels are distributed throughout Italy and in numerous international markets, from Europe to the United States, from Canada to Japan, and as far as China, India and Russia.
